WELL FIT

It has been a few weeks now since we threw Loose Fit a record launch party. It was very very hot and busy and loud. In short it was pretty fucking ace actually. Coma smashed some proper techno, Loose Fit did their thing, slowed down vocals, disco, slamming house and dubstep flavours riddled their set that was also jam packed with free style vocals and original material and hand gestures.. twas a sight to behold.

On top of that a whole host of Join the Dots residents filled in the gaps between the big guns. Benoit and Namedrop - dropped african vibez and disco sleaze. Joe Jackson on warm up duties got the place so hot I was forced to smokle lots of fags outside and Donaghy whilst playing some utterly splendid music, confused everyone with the change of position.

We did record the set but despite managing to rig up (the following information may not be factually corect) 9 keyboards, 14 microphones, 3 drum machines, 4 turntables, 2 CDJ's and a bucket of beer, the recording came out sounding like when I used to hear my old man fart through the bathroom door when he was taking a piss. Not actually fart through the door mind, there was no holes but just the sound of the wind being passed when heard from the other side of the door?

Whilst we obviously mourned the loss of the recording of this timeless, never to be repeated moment in music history, we luckily have a pretty wonderful lil bootleg, mash-up rewind, re-imagination of Simon and Garfunkle's Mrs Robinson that was cooked up by Danny and Johnny (Loose Fit) to give away to you all for nowt.

International bright young things

Berlin was and still is famous for techno, whether it be industrial or minimal, in Tresor or Berghain, gay or straight, Berlin and techno go hand in hand like Benoit and I across a dance floor!

This weekend myself and the diminutive Frenchman will be upping roots away from London's east end to ply our very own brand of non-techno orientated music at HottBoxx, a party in a basement in Berlin's artistic hinterland that is Kreuzberg.

Kreuzberg is in the old west German part of Berlin, it was the poor suburb that was squashed up against the wall. Since the wall came down it has developed as the creative hub of the city, paired with Mitte and Friedrichshain as the focal point of artistic endeavour that rings the Parlimentary and Governmental centre of the city.

As part of our little tour (one date does not a tour maketh) Berlin based musical information distributers Pulse radio have hosted a lil mix that myself and Benny Reich have done.

Right so I know it is February already (where did the time go.. insert tired cliches to support such an assertation)but as the Join the Dots massive is becoming, well massive we will be featuring a new mix on the blog each month, sometimes more than one from all the different members of our little gang.

Tonight Join the Dots are chucking a lil party for the release latest single at ? Bar in the so very organic/yogurt weaving enclave of Stoke Newington. The Loose fit boys who's singles Chug and Bolsena will be coming out very soon as part if a mega double EP. including a very baggy Greg Wilson mix will be playing along with a live set from Coma who we are flying in from Frankfurt and are makers of on the money "proper" house and Techo-ish music as well and 20:20 Vision stalwart Tom Taylor Plus JTDs residents

It's free all night and dancing, drinking and fun are all actively encouraged so maybe see you there?

Benoit and I being the jetsetting DJ uberlords that we are managed to fit in two gigs over New Year, yes 2!

We played on New Years Eve at the Electric Minds loft party which was pretty amazing actually. completely sold out, with a partially funtioning balloon drop, some epic balloon generated needle skips at midnight and 2 toilets. Pretty swish all round.

We then also played at the Low Life New Years Day party which as with every Low Life was epic.

New Years Eve is always something of a pain in the arse... yes it is cliche'd but it is true. With Places like the O2 charging a to be honest; fucking ridiculous SEVENTY FIVE quid to get in and Fabric raping you for Forty notes, for the un-imaginative, un-informed or un-cool the seeing out of another 12 months of shattered dreams and broken promises can be an expensive, alienating and depressing excercise.

So instead of crowding in with the tourists, suburbanites and thise that wear their sunglasses at night into a souless box, listening to David Guetta hand pleasuring himslef becase "he's famous" apparently, just spend 11 quid and buy a ticket for the Electric Minds from HERE.

It's in a brilliant intimate venue, the normal 102EH?, LOOSE and Electric Minds crew will be joinded by young girls on the block Minkioni and Party starters extraordinaire Bad Passion Project.

There is also a record fair and swap shop (got, got, need, need)upstairs for all you vinyl loving gimps.

I am a Vinyl loving gimp so no need to be ashamed

It is on till 2am it is free it will be rammo in the main room, there will be some beards and bevvy of beauties in attendance..

Is this the most un-Rock n Roll potentially Rock n Roll story ever told?

"Our bassist Tom went up later on in the night to the "VIP" backstage room to find a guy telling him the lights are off there. Tom not being afraid of the dark and slightly amused at the guys comments went into the room to find a boy on his knees "pleasuring" (orally) a lucky female on the sofa. Tom in a slightly shocked and aroused manner says" oh, hi guys, just getting my bass" which was right next to them.. the girl says "we should stop", dude replies "Nah, it's cool" tom grabs bass and says goodbye."

Not meaning to be sexist or owt but DJ/random band guy "pleasuring" the groupie.. what ever happened to eager to please female bandaids, raw meat, piles of blow and the odd bit of mindless destruction. Wonder who asked to turn the light off, and why didn't Tom join in?

Prior to this very middle class act of sexual gratification The Join the Dots Collective (our in house gang of musical lords) or JTDC as they will be known from here on in played their first proper gig on Saturday night at Beat Redemption in Bournmouth's old Fire Station.

Apparently they nearly died as part of a multiple pile up on the journey down, the car itself actually did die in the morning and in another Rock n Roll watershed moment just ripe for a Don Mclean, American Pie dedication, the AA were called out....

In keeping with the automotive theme Duffstep also played a live set, debuting material from his forthcoming album, that is receiving props from amongst others Mary Anne Hobbs and the 102eh gang in the brrm brrrm Engine room.

2009 The Year of the edit

2009 has been the year that Edits have reigned supreme, every week mail outs from record stores across the country are over flowing with edits of everything from Olivia Newton John, to Abba, Fleetwood Mac, Steveie Wonder.. the list goes on.

The debate over the worth of the edit is contentuious. Do they simply screw with what are already amazing records, does adding 8 bars to the beggining and end of a track make it an edit? Can you polish a turd? Do they devalue the originals (especially if you are selling original rare records)?

Edits are not a new thing, Although Harvey was releasing edits on Balck Cock back in 1997 the very idea of the remix, re-edit goes right back to the beggining of the Disco sound when Tom Moulton, wanting to extend the enjoyment of the records he was hearing created extended mixes. This mantle was lter taken up by producers and DJ's like Larry Levan, Shep Petibone and Walter Gibbons. Like Harvey in 1997 and contempories like Greg wilson, these early edit pioneers took a more hands on approach, physically cutting and sticking loops of tape togetehr to form extneded breaks and intro's or to remove noodly parts of track that may not work so well on the dancefloor.

Edit's are now done using ableton or logic, I hear some edits and simply think why? Why would you bother.. stop taking the piss out of me.. however sometimes I listen to an edit and am blown away... an edit can re-invent a song, can put it in the drivers seat of a runaway train bound straight for the dancfloor, can turn it into a blissful baeleric workout.. whilst the advances in technology have democrasized the process of editing it has also opened the flood gates to a whole heap of poo.

Confessional Time... when I was a kid, well 11 years old I toilet papered Whitney Houston's house on Halloween. True story. I was dressed as Zorro.

Whilst this story hasn't been incorporated in my formidable cannon of comedy for quite sometime it has begun to make a re-appearance at after parties recently mostly due to the storming Whitney comeback that is Million Dollar Bill... and her strange scary eyed appearance on X Factor...

Anyway this post isn't actually about Whitney, but her mamma Mrs Cissy Houston and what with the days getting ever so short I thought I would post this beauty all about what kind of mischief one can get up to in the hours of daylight that still remain!

A bit of a bumper package today.

Flogging nights to readers aint really what this blog is about though it seems to have taken up a fair amount of "print"? recently. Saying all this I am going to hawk another night to you here, however with a special lil freebie added in for good measure.

Our friends at Electric minds have in their Go Bang project that drops on Monday, put together one of the most exciting albums of the year.

Arthur Russell for those not in the know was something of a disco pioneer, releasing his own tracks, producing for Loose Joints, dating Alan Ginsberg as well as being a classically trained Cellist, he managed to escape his home town roots in deepest darkest Iowa to collaborate with the likes of David Byrne and Nicky Siano

Go Bang features a host of reworks as well as tracks recorded from scratch by artist such as Yam Who, Pocketknife and Faze Action. There is also a host of remixes available from Ilija Rudman, Mark E and Max Essa.

The in-store Album Launch party is on Monday whilst the big bad full-on, rave-up disco-fused, house-orientated, party is on Friday the 27th of November, Tickets can be purchased in advance and there will be a whole host of Djs and artists connected with the album there as well as the mighty Maurice Fulton, Severino from Horse Meat Disco, Lowlifes Bill Brewster and a trio of some of East London's finest Party starters LOOSE, Cosmic Truth and 102EH?.

LOOSE are purveyors of fine electronic music a bit like an Emmanuel film; their parties are deep slow and banging but always with a hint of humour and accompanied by a cocktail served with a synthesised disco twist.

Normally little reviews like this now give a quick overview including a list of the DJ's they have booked other parties they have played at and venues they have used so inkeeping with etiquette LOOSE have Booked many Dj's, guested at many other parties and thrown Hoe-downs in a number of different venues. All have been good, none of them have been even approaching shit.

They have taken a little sojourn over the summer to change Venues,moving home from Platinum strip club to the Shacklewell Arms in Dalston, which is brilliant as its near my flat.

Tomorrow night they have a man with a funny name and big reputaion guesting. The funny named man is Mugwump. He is from Belgium and makes amazing music. He will be playing records at a loud volume to which it is expected you dance.

Mark 7 - Salute to the Men of Vauxhall

This Blog is supposed to be about all things Join The Dots, news of gigs, releases and edits/mixes we have done. However every so often something rears it little head that deserves to be shared with all and sundry and this funnily enough after all the aforementioned hyperbole is exactly one of those things.

Mark Seven is a bit of a dude, a DJ, record collector, owner of Juswax record store , lives in Sweden, looks a bit like a modern pirate and is the owner of some of the best, rarest and most original records around.

A mix by Mark is a pretty rare thing, he is somewhat secretive about the tracks he plays and hardly ever agrees to allow his sets to be recorded. His Slow Blow Mix was an underground bomb, blogged more than a Lindsey lohan crotch shot and mused over in the greatest of detail by internet nerds across the globe.

A few months back the very trendy people at Oki Ni released A Salute to the Men of Vauxhall a three CD Mix of Mark's recorded at Sunday night Disco institution Horse Meat Disco. It is three hours of upfront disco and Saint-esq. early morning sleaze.

There's a few hits in there Pointer Sisters - Automatic and Hall and Oates - I can't go for that but good luck on spotting more than a quarter of the tracklist!

It was released as a limited edition free CD with Mark's latest 12" Travelogue and is already selling for upto £80 on Discogs.

Now with Mark's permission for those who either were not quick enough to get their hands on a copy (ha ha I have one) or don't have the money to spend £80 on a copy (ha ha I have one) here is the entire mix in full to download.

A Kenneth Ba(N)ger

Kenneth Bager is apparently the go to guy if you wanna run a record label he is also Danish which other than being a somewhat appetising culinary treat is also the national language of Denmark a Scandinavian country where splendidly (if your a man or a lesbian) there is on average 2 lasses to every lad.

Our Kenneth has worked with musical luminaries such as Peter Gabriel and Michael Nyman and has somehow now morphed into Denmark's latest pop sensation following in the monstrous top 40 footsteps of Aqua and perveyor all things weekend orientated Whigfield and performed this year at legendary pop/rock festival Roskilde.

Duff has done a remix of his latest little number, it has been denied by the record label :( , they said it didn't reference the original enough... all the above is a bit pointless, except to highlight that even a man with a track record longer than Linford Christie's schlong is prone to misjudgement.

Duff's getting props… or maybe the boys and girls at Piccadilly records in Manchester are just being nice because it was his birthday recently?

Either way the Dan Black remix EP that includes his pretty damn decent mix has been named record of the week by these purveyors of fine sonic weaponary.

They say

“The Duff Disco remix is a deep disco remix via South Londoner Duffstep. The hidden gem on the package, low slung late night disco grooves.”

The last sentence of which may actually be describing the man himself and his sexy dancing skills!

Field Day.. and Night

Field Day has been a beast of mixed reputation the last few years. For everyone who proclaimed “Justice were fucking amazing” someone else said “the sound was shit and I pissed in my knickers because the queues for the toilets were longer than the M6”*

For the last couple of years it has had some of the best line ups seen since the opening of “the usual suspects” This year they have managed to persuade luminaries such as Aeroplane, Erol Alkan, Mogwai, Skream and Owen Pallet’s amazing one man violin show Final Fantasy to play music in a park in East London.

Now while all this sounds absolutely mint, the festival has also been followed around by tales of shit sound, not enough bars and just shit, in the form of there not being anywhere near enough toilets.

Organisers have promised everyone that these have all been addressed and despite any problems the festival has been most of the time allot of fun, especially when the sun is out. One entirely positive trend from previous years is that, what have been consistently good each year without fail is the after parties and this year nothing has changed on that front! There are a couple of “official” (expensive) after parties and a slew of “official unofficial” (less expensive) after parties and parties of all sorts springing up all over the place chomping at the bit to cram the gurning masses into there little slice of post park action.

At one of these Deep Down in Hackney myself and Ben noir are hosting the Junk Yard Disco room alongside Join the Dots remixer Toby Tobias and Urban Nerds and Step One. Its only five minutes walk from the festival sight and is in the amazing Wallis Art gallery and warehouse, its intimate but not tiny (500 capacity) and is on all night long. Room 1 has Kitsune stalwarts Joe and Will Aks playing Live alongside Tapedeck DJs, Warboy and newest Bastard Batty Bass resident Deboa. Basically it will be a belter.

Fun can be had for an extended period for a very small dose of silver crossing a palm.... Hit me up at Mark@jointhedotsmusic for £5 concessions and if you don't believe me then even teh freebie papers are picking up on this one

You know that scary cupboard under your stairs (please keep reading if you live in a bungalow or a flat, this post is not trying to alienate you), where most people would keep a Hoover or where my Nan keeps the beer and lemonade she never drinks which she saves for when I come round (it is always flat) to visit.

Why in haunted house films does this cupboard always signify something evil and unspeakable.?The plot usually revolves around at least one skimpily dressed fit girl, who like every character Tom Cruise plays has this unnerving tendency to run allot, she will also get her white vest wet at least once.

There will also be at least one very odd older man, usually with a strange wandering eye. He will end up being either A: some evil pervert, a conduit through which what ever it is which lies beneath the stairs can permeate the real world or B: He will appear to be the previous, yet turn out to actually be a kind hearted, wise old man who has been battling to keep this evil at bay for decades. He will still be a little bit pervy and either way he will die.

The point being that it is always under the stairs, The Haunting in Connecticut, under the stairs, The Orphanage under the stairs, The Burbs you guessed where they keep the furnace..?

Tonight I am playing alongside 102eh partner in crime Benoit as well as Electric Minds Owner Dolan Bergin and Loose resident Cred at a night creepily called "under the stairs"at 333. in Shoreditch. In the other room is Shitdisco, Robotwon and a special live guest.

I will be the very odd, pervy older man with a strange wandering eye.. !!

Lindstrøm - Where You Go, I Go Too (Outmode's Melancholic Remix)

We put some remixes together towards the end of last summer for the legendary disco don Lindstrøm. If you have heard the original 'Where You Go, I Go Too', you'll know its an epic slice of melodic mayhem...notably some 28 mins or so in length. So when we received 4 DVDs worth of parts from this track, we knew we had our work cut out to make sense of it all. In the end we whittled it down to 2 Outmode remixes.

After much waiting around for the label to decide what they wanted to do with the remixes, and talk of releasing limited edition vinyls, our remixes sadly never saw the light of day. Nevertheless we got a nice nod of recognition from the man himself, and we thought it only right to share our work. We have tested our Melancholic remix at quite a few clubs and Glastonbury and it sounds fairly hefty to us. We hope you enjoy.

Having has just returned from an Electric Minds tour of Australia and Japan our boy Dolan sent us this video to accompany the first release on Yam's own imprint ISM.

Whilst I am sitting on my sofa watching it with a cold beer in my hand, a dry cigarette in my mouth, wearing warm socks and feeling safe in the knowledge that I have a double bed and duvet awaiting my arrival in the next room the boys responsible for the first single on Join the Dots (available now from Juno Digital), Outmode (John, Duff and Joe) will be taking their Live shizz to the mother of all English festivals and famous Dionysian mud bath orgy that is Glastonbury.

They are playing live on the glade stage of Friday at 5pm. That night they will then be walking through a field in knee deep mud, trying not to contract Swine flu and trying to buy expensive no drug, drugs, while I will be on the sofa mentioned previously waiting for my first glimpse of Fearne Cotton...

Note; Unlike the Emirates stadium (spit!) the Glade stage does not get its name due to the fact it is sponsored by the air freshener company.

It’s a tad intimidating writing the first post on a blog, I mean there are so many things to consider. You need to get the tone right, draw people in, yet not just ramble on and on about complete pony.

You need to be informative, but not dull. Funny but not up your arse regarding your immense arsenal of comedy weapons. There needs to be a point to what you are writing but then again it should read like you are catching up with a friend and not just imposing yourself upon people.

So the point of this is that apart from being the first post on our shiny happy new blog, Monday marks the date we pop our release cherry and shower you all in sonic love.
